Since its formation in 1979, the Lynton & Barnstaple Railway has managed
to acquire the remnants of five original coaches that operated up until
the line's closure in 1935. Three of these coaches, numbers 4, 7 and 17,
are being rebuilt and renovated at Great Yeldham in Essex. When completed,
the stock will be taken to the railway at Woody Bay. On 27th June, the
group undertaking the work held an open day. Chris Dadson has posted
photographs of the work here:

San Francisco Videos...
(With thanks to Mike Morant and Nico Spilt)
Film taken from a San Francisco street car over 100 years ago. This film
was "lost" for many years. It is thought to be the first ever 35mm film,
and was taken by a camera mounted on the front of a cable car. The clock
tower at the end of Market Street at the Embarcadero wharf is still there.
The film, was originally thought to be from 1905 until David Kiehn, with
the Niles Essanay Silent Film Museum, figured out exactly when it was
shot. From New York trade papers announcing the film showing, the wet
streets from recent heavy rainfall, shadows indicating the time of year,
actual weather conditions on historical record - even down to when the
cars were registered (he even knows who owned them, and when the plates
were issued!), it has been worked out that it was filmed only four days
before the Great California Earthquake of 18th April 1906. It was then
shipped by train to New York for processing.

The video has also been used in a "before and after the earthquake"
comparison:

Ralph Rawlinson's Railway Roundup
London
NLL Following a major upgrade the Gospel Oak-Stratford section of the
North London Line reopened on schedule on 1st June 2010. A considerable
amount of work, including completion of the stations, remains to be done
before the 326m project is completed in 2011, whilst another closure is
planned next winter to commission new signalling.
South Ruislip
An additional NW bound line (down main) is to be built at Northolt Jn as
part of Chiltern's Evergreen 3 project. This will enable a 100mph line
speed compared with the 50/60mph of the present alignment which dives
under the line from Paddington via Greenford before joining it at South
Ruislip. All fast trains from Marylebone will use the new route but
stopping trains will continue to use the dive under before calling at
South Ruislip, allowing overtaking.
Woking
The bill for the eco-friendly canopy outside the station has cost more
than 4m. Annual electricity sales generated 3,383 but running costs
have been 119,206 with a further 7,884 for insurance and 7,500 for
maintenance!
Trimley
Once threatened with demolition, the Ipswich-Felixstowe line station
building may now be converted into a caf.
Norwich
The swing bridge at Trowse should soon be back in full operation after
200,000 has been spent on mechanical repairs. Boat traffic on the River
Yare has been disrupted since a power surge damaged lifting equipment in
June 2008.

Lincoln
East Coast's plans to run seven weekday trains between Lincoln and London
from next summer have been scrapped. The present one train a day in each
direction will instead continue to operate.
South Yorkshire
Freight services between Humber ports and West Yorkshire currently have to
run along the ECML for 14 miles, slowing passenger services. The proposed
54m North Doncaster flyover will take freight trains from Stainforth Jn
over the ECML at Joan Croft Junction and on to the line to Knottingley.
Republic of Ireland
Iarnrd ireann has announced that passenger trains on the line between
Waterford and Rosslare will be withdrawn on Wednesday 21st July 2010.

Competition through the Chunnel
German state rail operator Deutsche Bahn has been in talks with London and
Continental Railways about running its trains through the Channel Tunnel.

Austria
The Austrian Federal Railways (BB) has awarded Finland's Pyry a contract
to oversee the upgrade project "Lambach-Breitenschtzing". This involves
the diversion of the Spckbach river as well as new rail and road
infrastructure construction and renovation including several bridges and
underpasses as well as reconstruction of Neukirchen station. In the
course of the project about 4km of the existing double-tracked line
between Vienna and Salzburg will be replaced with a new line. The works
will start in August 2010 and shall be completed in October 2013.

railways operator Slovenske Zeleznice.

Azerbaijan-Georgia-Turkey
Employees of Azerbaijan railways have been seconded to work in Georgia on
the Baku-Tiblisi-Kars railway.

Oman
The Sultanate's railway project consists of four sections: 1) Sohar-Muscat
section (260km) with eight passenger stations, 2) Muscat-Duqm section
(526km) with nine passenger stations, 3) Sohar-Buraimi section (140km)
with four passenger stations, 4) Sohar-Khatmat Melaha section (58km) with
four passenger stations. The twin-track electrified lines will be
operated at a speed of 125mph for passenger trains although the spec takes
into consideration a speed of 220mph. Earlier in 2010 a feasibility study
was completed into the 306km part of the grid which links Oman with the
United Arab Emirates in preparation for linkage with a common a 1940km-
long Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) network. Preliminary estimates show
that the design stage will take one and a half years whilst that the
project will take five years to complete.

late July 2010.

Botswana
The public will have to wait a little longer for the reintroduction of the
Botswana Railways (BR) passenger service which was discontinued last year.

India
The Garib Rath express train is one of the premier trains introduced by
the Indian Railways in 2005 to provide fully air-conditioned travel for
those passengers who could not afford the expensive tickets of the fully
air-conditioned coaches as in Rajdhani Express and Shatabdi Express. Garib
Rath {the name means Poor Man's Chariot} was introduced on the basis of
running faster than most other express trains. The maximum speed of Garib
Rath trains is 80mph which is the same as Rajdhani's top speed. They also
have many amenities such as fridge, microwave oven, tv, cooler, fan and
toaster whilst a continuous electronic display shows distance remaining,
next station name and expected arrival. The emergence of the Garib Rath
has led to more connections between commercially important routes, where
these trains run faster and make fewer stops.
